Su Tseng-chang
- Magistrate, Taipei County

Note (6/17/02) : Due to an unexpected event, Mr. Su has informed TAC/EC Planning Committee that, with regrets, he has to cancel the already scheduled trip to Amherst.  Mr. Su has been asked to accompany President Chen Shui-bian to visit African nations in early July.

Mr. Su asks the Planning Committee to convey his warmest and sincerest regards to all the TAC/EC participants. Although we will surely miss the opportunity to meet with Mr. Su at TAC/EC, all of us sincerely wish him a productive and  successful journey to Africa.

Su Tseng-chang is currently serving his second term as the Magistrate of Taipei County, the largest county in Taiwan with 3.6 million residents.  Prior to this, Mr. Su was also elected to serve the Pindong County as its Magistrate and to represent Taipei County in Taiwan's Legislative Yuan.

Mr. Su was one of the founding members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DDP) and a defense lawyer in the trial of the so-called "Kaohsiung Incident". These heroic actions preceded Taiwan's recent transformation into a blossoming democracy and underscore Mr. Su's firm belief in fundamental human rights and his enormous contribution to Taiwan's democratization movement.

After Mr. Su's successful bid for his second term as the Magistrate of Taipei County last December he has risen to become the most prominent and popular political figure in Taiwan.  His unparalleled dedication to democracy, effective governing, and clean elections have generated strong support and respect from all walks of life in Taiwan. His down-to-earth passion in serving his constituents has particularly touched the hearts of the grassroots.

TAC/EC 2002 has the great honor of hosting Mr. Su this year.  He is scheduled to deliver a keynote speech on 7/5/02.  He will also participate, as a panelist, in the political forum on "today's and future Taiwan."
