Greetings from the TAC-EC 2002 Second Generation Program Committee!  With Taiwanese Americans growing up in an increasingly career-minded society, especially with the current economic climate, children as well as adults face more complex choices, challenges, and pressures in order to survive and excel in today’s environment.  This trend is happening with younger people of all races across America.  The fact is that Taiwanese Americans are already making an impact on American Society, but more can be done especially with a support infrastructure.  Our conference aims to provide a start to that infrastructure through a program that develops individual values, skills, and knowledge that are useful in everyday life.

The goal of this year's Second Generation program is to help participants understand themselves and draw positive lessons.  To carry out an effective program, we have divided it into five focus groups – Young professionals, College, High School, Junior HS and Elementary, and Toddlers to 2nd Grade.  Furthermore, our program topics are designed around small work groups that use the philosophy of talking with you and not at you.  Examples of our program topics are the following:

  1.  Working with others without giving up control

  2.  Working around individual weaknesses

  3.  Getting what you deserve

  4.  Overcoming pressure

  5.  What's next in my life?

  6.  Social change for Taiwanese Americans

Needless to say, we will have cultural activities across all age groups that are part of the TAC-EC heritage.

We realize that with the difficult economic conditions, your time has become more valuable.  We hope you will reserve your July 4th, 2002 weekend to join us at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst for this year’s East Coast TA Conference and walk away with a fresh outlook.

For those interested in contributing, we have a need for RAs or Group Leaders from age 16 and over.  Please contact tan_tommy@yahoo.com or 781-425-6451 with any questions or comments.  Thank you!

Sincerely,

Taiwanese American Conference – East Coast (TAC-EC) 2002      March 10, 2002
